Avalose Podi (also spelled Avalosepodi, Avalos podi, or Avalose podi) is a traditional snack mix from Kerala, known for its long shelf life, wholesome ingredients, and versatility. It’s especially popular in Christian households, often made in bulk and stored for daily use – mostly enjoyed as an evening snack or used to make Avalose Unda by adding melted jaggery and rolling it into lemon-sized balls.

Avalose podi is a roasted mix of rice flour and grated coconut, with a touch of cumin and sesame seeds. It’s usually eaten dry, or mixed with a bit of sugar (or jaggery) and banana, or simply served alongside tea. It has a nutty, aromatic flavour thanks to the slow roasting of rice and coconut. The process is a bit time-consuming, but truly worth it.

Avalose podi is also used to make a traditional snack called “Churuttu”, which is mostly found only in Kottayam, Kerala. In this, avalose podi is mixed with melted jaggery and filled into a cone made from samosa sheets. It’s a unique and very tasty treat – sweet, crisp, and full of nostalgic charm.
