A Snack for All Seasons
Diamond cuts are my favourite snack, especially during the rains. They come in two versions – savoury and sweet – and I personally prefer the savoury one. It’s easy to make, crispy to munch on, and perfect for tea time. You can prepare it anytime with just a few basic ingredients.
The main ingredient is wheat flour, though you can also use all-purpose flour. In this recipe, I’ve used both in equal proportion for a balanced texture – crisp yet light.
There’s a theory that diamond cuts may have originated from leftover food – old chapatis or rotis cut up and fried into crunchy bites. Over time, though, this humble idea evolved into a snack with its own identity, widely loved across households.
The savoury version, often seasoned with chilli powder, salt, and sesame seeds , is perfect as a rainy-day companion with a hot cup of tea. The sweet version, on the other hand, can be made with either sugar or jaggery. I prefer the jaggery version – it’s slightly healthier and adds a richer, earthy sweetness.
Whether you like them sweet or spicy, diamond cuts are a nostalgic, comforting snack that never goes out of style.
